Vision
Stevenson Middle School’s staff and parents are dedicated to providing students with a rigorous student-centered and standards-based curriculum that will prepare them to meet or exceed California State standards.

Mission
Our mission is to educate every student every day. This means that our focus in every classroom is improving teaching and learning every day.

One way that we are doing this is through imbedding the philosophy of Dr. Lauren Resnick from the University of Pittsburgh's Institute for learning. The Institute's philosophy is that all students, with appropriate effort, are capable of high-achievement  and high-level thinking.

At the core the Institute’s philosophy are nine Principles of Learning. The Principles of Learning is the product of extensive research and they are designed to help schools analyze the quality of teaching and learning that occurs daily.

At Stevenson we will focus on three of the principles listed below  Through collaborative work our teachers will continue to move forward to increase academic achievement for all children.

The Principles of Learning
Academic Rigor in a Thinking Curriculum
Our state standards, establish core-learning expectations for all students.  The standards require students to think    deeply about what they are learning and to use that learning in their conversations, writing, and project.

Clear Expectations
By informing students and families about student learning expectations, we are focusing on setting clear learning goals for all students.  For students, this means that they know what they are learning and why that information or skill is important.  They are told what the standards are and have models of good work that they can use to evaluate their own work and the work of others.

Accountable Talk
When students talk about concepts and about their work in relation to the standards, then they are engaging in accountable talk.  Accountable Talk requires students to listen to and talk with each other about learning and to discuss the quality of their work.
